Position Overview
The Illinois State Police (ISP) is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Internal Security Investigator I to support the Public Safety Firearms Services section within the Division of Justice Services. Applies modern technical investigative law enforcement techniques and databases. Operates general office equipment, a personal computer, various computer software programs, and a state-owned vehicle to complete the duties described above and below. Prepares and procures statements, exhibits, reports and other pertinent information of an evidentiary nature for use in the formal adjudication of cases in a court of law as provided by state criminal statutes. Prepares routine investigative reports on activities and investigations conducted.

Essential Functions
- Compiles and gathers relevant data in regulatory and criminal investigations, specifically relating to the effective enforcement of the FDLC Act and other state laws related to the Firearms Services Bureau.
- Assists higher level investigators and participates in investigations.
- Responsible for maintaining investigative records and files pertaining to cases under investigation and ensuring security of such information.
- Develops and maintains effective liaisons with city, county and state law enforcement officials as well as other interested governmental officials in order to ensure an integrated and cooperative law enforcement effort and deliver credible testimony in a court of law, civil proceedings, and administrative hearings.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonable within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college, with coursework in law, government, liberal arts, history or business or public administration, plus three (3) years professional experience in law enforcement investigatory work or a related field. OR Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, with major coursework in law, government, liberal arts, history or business or public administration, plus one year professional experience in law enforcement investigatory work or a related field. OR Requires completion of the F.B.I. National Academy or comparable law enforcement schooling.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or equivalent or a minimum of ten (10) consecutive years of service as a certified sworn police officer with the Illinois State Police or agency recognized by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board as a law enforcement agency in the State of Illinois or equivalent agency outside of the State of Illinois.
- Prefers one (1) year experience working with the Illinois Firearm Dealer License Certification Act, Firearms Owners Card Act, and Illinois Concealed Carry Act.
- Prefers two (2) years’ experience using computer programs such as Word and Excel, as well as databases such as LEADS 2000, VITAL, Westlaw, and other related databases.
- Prefers two (2) years’ experience demonstrating police knowledge of criminal investigations.
- Prefers two (2) years’ experience preparing case reports for referral to prosecuting agency.
- Prefers two (2) years’ experience communicating with a wide range of individuals.
Conditions of Employment
- Required to pass the Illinois State Police Background investigation including fingerprinting and drug testing.
- Required to possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card.
- Requires to successfully complete required training.
- Requires a valid Illinois driver's license and ability to travel (some overnights).
