Position Overview

Under supervision of the Correctional Lieutenant, directly responsible for housing units/building(s) on an assigned shift; serves as a lead worker; assists in the orientation of new officers and on-going officer in­ service training; enforces and maintains disciplinary, safety, sanitary, security and custodial measures.

Job Requirements

1.  Performs inspections; verifies proper application of institutional procedures by security staff.

2. Monitors inmate movement.

3.  Verifies Correctional Officers are assigned to and relieved for meals.

4.  Monitors inmates who are suicide risks, inmates who are ill and inmates who are confined to their rooms.

5.  Assists in orientation/training of new officers providing ongoing training and practical advice to subordinates in proper job perfcirmanc.

6.  Investigates and prepares special reports on unusual incidents, destruction of property etc.

7.  Operates vehicle to transport inmates to and from court appearences, transfers to other correctional facilities.

8.  Serves as designated lead worker.

9. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Reqires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school and completion on an approved correctional officer training program.
  2. Requires one year of experience as a Correctional Officer in a penal or security institution.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Requires thorough knowledge of institution's physical layout and prison operation.
  2. Requires through knowledge of institutional rules, regulations and requirements for the control of inmates.
  3. Requires elementary knowledge of purposes, methods and practices of modern correctional institutions.
  4. Requires visual/audio acuity. 
  5. Requires physical ability to perform duties assigned.
  6. Requires ability to enforce and maintain discipline, safety, sanitation, security and custodial measures.
  7. Requires the ability to properly use firearms.
