Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Site Assistant Superintendent 2 at Starved Rock State Park for the Office of Land Management. This position will participate in a variety of recreation, natural resources, safety and security and site programs for Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park, and its satellites. The person in this position will provide maintanance for the water systems and the wastewater treatment plant and perform groundskeeping and landscaping duties. They will also serve as a supervisor providing guidance and training to staff. Starved Rock State Park is nestled along the Illinois River with 18 canyons with striking vertical walls of moss-laden St. Peter Sandstone, shaped by glacial meltwater over 14,000 years ago. With 13 miles of trails visitors can explore rain-fed waterfalls, sandstone overhangs, and breathtaking viewpoints. Starved Rock has numerous recreational activities available, including hiking, camping, fishing, boating, and hunting. Essential Functions

  • Serves as working supervisor.
  • Coordinates and participates in a variety of recreation, natural resource, safety and security and programs for Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park, and its satellites.
  •  Coordinates and participates in site programs including camping, fishing/boating, trail activities, waterfowl hunting, upland game hunting, picnicking and day use activities, as well as numerous permit activities.
  • Assists in implementing the safety and security programs at the site.
  • Completes reports and makes amendments to operational procedures.
  •  Monitors staff in the use of equipment and vehicles.
  • In the absence of the site superintendent, serves as the site superintendent.
  •  Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably with the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree with courses in public administration, park and recreation administration, natural resource administration or a related field and one year's related line supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration, including site interpretation, natural and/or cultural resource conservation, structural and grounds maintenance, public relations, personnel administration, and fiscal management.
  • Two (2) years of experience in applying appropriate levels of knowledge in problem solving situations encountered in the performance of duties and responsibilities encompassed by the class.
  • One (1) year of experience in assigning, supervising and evaluating the work of subordinate employees.

The Historic Sites Division of the Office of Land Management oversees 57 Historic Sites, Monuments, and Memorials. OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.

Work Hours: April-September - 2 weeks: Sat & Sun 8am-4pm and Mon, Tues & Wed 3pm-11pm (Thurs & Fri Off); Next 2 weeks: Mon-Fri 3pm-11pm

Oct-April - Mon-Fri 8am-4pm and work rotating every third week
