Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire two Site Technicians 2 for Starved Rock State Park and it's affiliates; Mitchell's Grove Nature Preserve, Sandy Ford Natural Area, and Margery Carlson Nature Preserve. These positions will assist with building and ground maintenance using a variety of equipment, perform routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment, design layout and constructs wooden and heat-treated interpretive and informational signs, and on an intermittent basis provide leadership and direction to Illinois Department of Transportation. The ideal candidate will be able to utilize their maintenance and communication skills regularly on various tasks throughout the park. Starved Rock State Park stands out as one of the most stunning spots in Illinois and it nestled along side the Illinois River. It's characterized by the many canyons within its 2,630 acres and hosts over two million visitors annually. We welcome all interested candidates to apply.
Essential Functions
- Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled, routine maintenance, and program support tasks at Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park, and its Satellites - Mitchell's Grove Nature Preserve, Sandy Ford Natural Area, and Margery Carlson Nature Preserve.
- Assists with building and ground maintenance at the sites.
- Assists campers with various aspects of the park.
- Maintains site landscaping and trail systems.
- Designs layout and constructs wooden and heat-treated interpretive and informational signs; orders materials.
- Performs routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Assists with the safety of site visitors.
- On a intermittent basis, provides leadership and direction to Illinois Department of Transportation employees.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two (2) years of working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
- Two (2) years of experience following written and oral instructions.
- Two (2) years of experience informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and regulations.

- Valid driver's license
- Requires ability to obtain pesticide operator's license within 6 months of employment
- Requires ability to obtain water and/or wastewater treatment operator's certificate within 6 months of employment
- Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis
- Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds
- Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds
- Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain
- Requires ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR Certification

Work Hours: Nov - March: Mon - Fri 8am - 4pm (1/2 hr lunch), working every 3rd weekend; April - Oct: alternating 6 week shifts of nights Thurs - Mon 3pm - 11pm (1/2 hr lunch)
