Position Description and Responsibilities

Under direct supervision of the Stationary Engineer – Assistant Chief performs paraprofessional, semiskilled work in the maintenance and operation of several types of furnaces, boilers and water softener plant at Vandalia Correctional Center; directs inmates; enforces and maintains safety, sanitary security and custodial measures.

  • 25% Confirms all high low-level pressure boilers are operational.  Tests safety equipment to ensure proper operations.  Performs daily checks on all hot air furnaces in institutional housing to ensure proper operations.  Maintains efficient heat and safety standards.  Monitors operation of the water softener plant.
  • 20% Directs and trains offenders assigned to the boiler room in the proper way to fire a boiler.  Maintain safety standards.  Reports infractions of rules by offenders; enforces and maintains safety, sanitary, security and custodial measures.  Searches for contraband.
  • 20% Confirms all high- and low-pressure boilers have the proper chemical water balance according to the Illinois State Water Survey.  Verifies equipment is operating at its highest point of efficiency and under all safety conditions.
  • 10% Confirms all high- and low-pressure boiler, tanks and heating equipment is prepared for inspections at the appropriate intervals according to the Illinois State Law.  Maintains equipment is assembled properly and placed on high- and low-pressure boiler and hydrostatic test.
  • 10% Prepares inventory on all fuels in stock and prepares reports of same.  Makes recommendation on annual consumption.  Maintains records of all boilers indicating water consumptions, amount of chemicals consumed for future reference in ordering chemicals.  Contacts vendors for information for repair parts; orders materials and parts.
  • 10%Provides assistance to other maintenance department staff in emergency situations, heavy equipment operation, over the road tractor and trailer equipment.  Performs minor maintenance functions.
  • 5%Performs other duties as required of assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

 

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school. 
  • Requires three years of experience in the operation of an institution wastewater treatment plant and the possession of an E.P.A. Class “A” Water Supply Operator Certificate,
  • OR
  • Requires three years of experience in the operation of an institution wastewater treatment plant and the possession of an E.P.A. Class III Wastewater Treatment Works Operator Certificate,
  • OR
  • Requires three years of experience in the operation of an institution power plant with some knowledge in E.P.A. Emissions Standards.
  • Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six months of employment.
