Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a motivated Corrections Utilities Operator at Vandalia Correctional Center. The successful candidate performs paraprofessional, semi-skilled work in the maintenance and operation of several types of furnaces and boilers. Job Responsibilities

  1. Confirms all high low level pressure boilers are operational.
  2. Directs and trains individuals in custody assigned to boiler room.
  3. Confirms all high- and low-pressure boilers have the proper chemical water balance according to the Illinois State Water Survey.
  4. Prepares Inventory on all fuels in stock and prepares reports of same.
  5. Provides assistance to other maintenance department staff in emergency situations, heavy equipment operation, over the road tractor and trailer equipment.
  6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of high school.
  2. Requires three (3) years of experience in the operation of an institution water plant and the possession of an E.P.A. Class "A'' Water Supply Operator Certificate OR Requires three (3) years of experience in the operation of an institution wastewater treatment plant and the possession of an E.P.A. Class Ill Wastewater Treatment works Operator Certificate OR Requires three (3) years of experience in the operation of an institution power plant with some knowledge in E.P.A. Emissions Standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Prefers at least three (3) years of experience in the operation of an institution power plant.
  2. Prefers at least three (3) years of experience in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.
  3. Prefers at least three (3) years of experience in preventative maintenance on machines and equipment in a boiler system.
  4. Prefers at least three (3) years of experience in steam traps and/or pumps.
  5. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience writing reports in a work setting.
  6. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience maintaining work logs and/or records for maintenance jobs completed.
  7. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience instructing and/or directing individuals in custody.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six months of employment.
  2. Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  3. Requires ability to pass a drug screen.  The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
  4. Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.
