Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a motivated plumber at Vandalia Correctional Center. The successful candidate will perform journey level plumbing work. In addition, the successful candidate will supervise and conduct on-the-job training to help individuals in custody develop plumbing trade skills. Essential Functions
- Performs journey level plumbing repairs and installations for the facility.
- Measures, cuts, and treads pipe, using stocks and dies, power threading machines, power saws, wrenches, and pipe machines.
- Melts and caulks lead joints, using gas fired furnaces, blow torches, caulking chisels and cutting and welding equipment.
- Instructs individual in custody workers.
- Performs or directs trenching, excavating and back filling operations necessary to begin or continue work on underground installations or repairs.
- Keeps accurate count of inventory.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of high school.
- Requires possession of a current valid plumber's license issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
- Requires the possession of a valid certificate as a Cross-Connection Control Device Inspector (CCCDI) or the acquisition of the certificate within the probationary period of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience working with the tools, equipment, materials, methods and practices of the plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning and refrigeration trades.
- Prefers at least four (4) years of experience working with laws relating to sanitation and public health.
- Prefers at least four (4) years of experience utilizing all of the tools in the plumbing trade.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience maintaining and repairing commercial plumbing systems.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience interpreting blueprints, plans, simple drawings, or sketches.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in maintaining work logs/records for plumbing jobs completed.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in installing new plumbing systems.
- Prefers the ability to manage time and workload and adjust their schedule for emergency work as needed.
- Prefers the ability to instruct and/or direct semi-skilled workers, unskilled workers, trade helpers and/or individuals in custody.
- Prefers the ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with fellow workers, supervisors, and other trades.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
- Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
