Position Overview

The Stationary Engineer position operates, monitors, and maintains power plant equipment and mechanical systems at Shawnee Correctional Center. This individual will also make scheduled and unscheduled inspections of all equipment at regular intervals, prepare daily records and logs, and perform routine testing, treatment, and monitoring of water used for consumption and utility generation systems. In addition, they will support preventative maintenance execution and planning. The ideal candidate would be self-motivated, task oriented, and organized. Essential Functions

  • Operates and maintains the power plant equipment, including the maintenance upkeep and repair of the low-pressure boilers, refrigeration units, central air handling units, air compressors, cooling towers, heat exchangers, cooling and heating systems, steam traps and lines, valves, thermostats, electronic valves and controllers, emergency generators, gas, water, and sewage meters, etc.
  • Makes routine inspections of all equipment that is in operation.
  • Operates the master control panel through the understanding of schematic diagrams, regulates (increases and decreases) the temperature (water or air) in the buildings of the facility.
  • Chemically analyzes boiler, heating, cooling, and water.
  • Prepares daily records of temperatures of outside air, heating and cooling waters, and domestic waters.
  • Serves as a designated lead worker.
  • Assists in maintaining the boiler room and its equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Instructions and directs the unskilled workers/individuals in custody assigned to assist with tasks.
  • Assists in maintaining the air conditioning/refrigeration equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
  • Requires four (4) years of experience in power plant operation and firing high pressure and/or low pressure stationary boilers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers completion of current OSHA 10 training.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of professional and/or journey level trades experience in the operation, repair, and preventative maintenance of power plant equipment.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience performing routine inspections of boilers and water supply systems and water testing for domestic consumption and/or generating systems.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience using schematic diagrams to operate a master control panel to regulate air and water temperatures in a large building or facility.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of chillers.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of emergency power generation using a diesel generator.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of supervisory and/or lead worker experience.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience maintaining a boiler room.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years installing, troubleshooting, and repairing HVAC equipment.
  • Prefers a candidate with a certification as a Universal Technician under U.S. E.P.A. Section 608 Rules and/or passed all three EPA Section 608 Technician Certification Types (I, II and III).

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
  • This position requires the ability to work at heights, including on ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, or elevated platforms, while adhering to all safety regulations and using appropriate fall protection measures.
