Position Overview:
The Corrections Maintenance Worker position performs maintenance work in the repairs of institution buildings, equipment, and machinery at IYC Warrenville. The ideal candidate would not only possess these skills, but also be motivated to instruct youth that have been committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice in the performance of semi-skilled maintenance tasks, and transfer their skills to youth that have a desire to learn. This position is part of the team of Maintenance staff that work to maintain the buildings and grounds at IYC Warrenville. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply!
Essential Functions:
- Under general supervision, performs maintenance work below the journeyman level in the repair of institutional buildings, machinery, and equipment.
- Assigns maintenance or repair tasks to youth performing maintenance repairs.
- Communicates with Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and Stationary Engineer- Assistant Chief in regard to the needs of the institution.
- Maintains inventory and accounts for all tools and equipment belonging to the institution.
- Troubleshoots and resolves minor semi-skilled electrical and plumbing issues or assigns others to do so when absent.
- Provides supervision in the operation of a small maintenance or repair shop within the institution.
- Coordinates vehicle repair and maintenance as per Administrative Directive.
- Cleans and services grease traps bi-weekly
Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years high school.
- Requires one (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds.
Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance):
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience applying knowledge of the machinery and equipment used in buildings and grounds maintenance.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in the economical usage of materials and supplies.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience of planning and laying out work according to requirements of assignment, and to lead youth by example and instruction.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in enforcing disciplinary, safety, security, and custodial measures for the control of youth.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience applying knowledge of institutional rules, regulations, and requirements for managing youth behavior.
Conditions of Employment:
- This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Requires completion of an approved pre-service training course within six (6) months of employment.
- Requires the ability to pass an IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held is prohibited.

Over 900 staff members from across various departments—security, programming, education, mental health, and more—collaborate with the understanding that youth are physically, emotionally, and cognitively different from adults. The department provides extensive services to young people through a developmental, treatment-focused model of care that builds youth resiliency, engages families, and promotes community safety at the five youth facilities it operates across the state. IDJJ serves and houses approximately 150 youth and is responsible for approximately 500 youth on Aftercare in various Illinois’ communities.
