POSITION SUMMARY

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services Bureau of Property Management is seeking to hire an experience and self-motivated Building & Grounds Laborer in Lake County to serve it’s Chicago & Northern region portfolio. This hands-on position is responsible for performing exterior maintenance of facilities, non-skilled routine cleaning tasks, assisting with maintenance of HVAC units and systems, loading and unloading trucks of various materials, and operating heavy equipment such as tractors, backhoe, end loader, lawn equipment at various locations. The ideal candidate has experience with lawn care maintenance, knowledge of cleaning methods, and experience operating hand and power tools. We invite all qualified candidates to apply!

POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Under immediate supervision of the Facility Supervisor, performs exterior maintenance of facilities.

  • Performs nonskilled routine cleaning tasks and interior/exterior maintenance functions within the Chicago & Northern Region.

  • Assists with the maintenance of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems along with various building maintenance and security situations.

  • Loads and unloads trucks containing facility office furniture, various materials, and equipment.

  • Operates building/grounds equipment including, lawn trimmers, lawn mowers, snow removal equipment such as blowers and plows, hedge clippers, pallet jacks, dollies, spreaders, tillers, desk jacks, manlifts, and leaf blowers. 

  • Travels to other facilities within Chicago & Northern Region to maintain the buildings and grounds of those facilities on an as-needed basis.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of those duties enumerated above.    

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prefers working knowledge of grounds/building maintenance and cleaning methods.
  • Prefers working knowledge of the use and care of janitorial cleaning equipment.
  • Prefers working knowledge of hand and power tools.
  • Prefers working knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment (e.g., tractor lawn mower, string trimmer, shovel) use and maintenance.
  • Prefers one (1) year of professional experience following oral and written instructions. 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends. This also requires the ability to work in an ‘on call’ capacity during inclement weather to remove and/or plow snow.
  • Requires ability to climb a ladder and/or scaffolding up to 20 ft. and work on rooftops.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel to other facilities.
  • Requires ability to lift and carry materials/equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and assist with lifting up to 100 pounds.
  • Requires ability to utilize agency supplied material/equipment (i.e., smartphone, mobile phone, etc.) to respond to emergency calls.
