Position Statement

Under direct supervision, repairs and maintains buildings, fixtures, equipment, and regularly operates heavy equipment at Wolf Creek State Park.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Operates road grader, back hoe, and front end loaders for moving of rock, leveling of camppads, erosion control, opening of ditches, and multi-floral rose eradication; make, install and maintain signs; perform carpentry skills in building privie buildings, trail head signs, benches and play equipment; make minor repair to air conditioning, heating, plumbing and electrical systems. Operates vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds with Air Brakes. 
  2. Mow site grounds utilizing tractors, bushhogs, riding and hand mowers; clear vegetatio with tractors, chain saws and weedeaters; rake leaves.
  3. Clean and disinfect restrooms and shower buildings; plant trees, shrubs, grass and flowers; repair and paint picnic tables and stoves; plow and shovel snow; patch roads; reroof/reshingle buildings and picnic shelters; build concrete forms.
  4. Sell camping permits and collect fees; tend hunter check stations; directs traffic.
  5. Assist in implementing safety and security programs at the site; inspects public use areas for hazards, flooding, broken equipment, fallen trees and erosion; inspects to assure building and gates are properly locked; inform visitors of rules and regulations; assist in the rescue of injured or stranded site visitors; administer First Aid and CPR; in the event of emergencies or disturbances, contacts proper authorities; inspects and maintains sewage treatment plant.
  6. On an intermittent or seasonal basis provides leadership and direction to seasonal employees, volunteers and other staff; provides on-the-job training to new employees and volunteers to familiarize them with site facilities, programs, tools and equipment.
  7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two year's maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery;
  • Requires working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment or farming machinery and implements;
  • Requires possession of a valid Class A Illinois Commercial Driver's License with air brakes designation;
  • Requires ability to administer First Aid and CPR and maintain certification in such;
  • Requires ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis;
  • Requires ability to inform visitors of site facilities programs, rules, and regulations;
  • Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, buildings and grounds;
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads on a regular basis which may exceed fifty (50) pounds;
  • Requires physical ability to walk over rough and broken terrain;
  • Requires ability to obtain a waste water treatment operator's certificate.

Physical Requirements

  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis;
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads on a regular basis which may exceed fifty (50) pounds.

Work Hours:  APR-Mid DEC: 7:30am to 3:30pm with rotating days off (Sat-Sun or Mon-Tues), Mid-Dec. to Mar. 31:  Mon-Fri 7:30am to 3:30pm (Sat-Sun off); holiday weekends including Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Columbus Day may include a 3pm-11pm shift.
