Position Overview

Under general supervision, assist with supervising a large staff of employees at Illinois Beach State Park that are engaged in site maintenance, interpretive and operational activities; prepares, conducts, and signs performance evaluations; supervisors and participates in asbestos management and removal operations; serves as Site Superintendent in the absence thereof.

Job Responsibilities

1.  Serves as working supervisor:

  • Assigns and reviews work
  • Provides guidance and training to assigned staff
  • Counsels staff regarding work performance
  • Reassigns staff to meet day-to-day operating needs
  • Establishes annual goals and objectives
  • Approves time off
  • Prepares and signs performance evaluations
  • Determines and recommends staffing needs

 

2.  Coordinates and participates in site programs including camping, fishing/boating, trail activities, archery deer hunts, picnicking and day use activities, as well as numerous permit activities:

  • Assists higher level supervisors in the preparation of annual and seasonal plans of work.
  • Provides input for budgetary recommendations
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports including time reports of public 1 service and public assistance participants, campground hosts and volunteers, maintenance, inventory, hunting programs, fire, gas and oil reports and requisitions from the state garage.

 

3.  Directs and participates in the maintenance of site grounds, facilities, and equipment:

  • Inspects facilities for preventative maintenance planning
  • Monitors and implements site security/safety programs, reviews to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations
  • Operates vehicles on site and to meetings

 

4.    Coordinates and participates in designated outdoor recreational, natural, safety/security, and maintenance programs:

  • Coordinates effective maintenance programs for site bath houses, beach houses, office complex, full services resort, restroom facilities and all public use structures
  • Coordinates use and operations of maintenance equipment and services provided to site concessionaires
  • Engages in site maintenance and construction projects
  • Participates in grounds keeping and landscaping duties such as mowing, trimming, and spraying and application of pesticides
  • Engages in tree trimming and cutting activities

 

5.    Conducts site patrols on foot or by vehicle(s):

  • Provides assistance to visitors and responds to visitor accidents.
  • Inspects trail systems again the established trail maintenance checklist.
  • Answers telephones at the site.
  • Assists site visitors by responding to questions and instructs and advises them concerning policies, rules and regulations.
  • Notifies appropriate authorities in the event of emergencies, disturbances, or criminal activities

 

6.  Assumes responsibility for operation of Illinois Beach State Park during Site Superintendent's absence. 

 

7.  Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to a bachelor's degree in park and recreation administration, or natural resource area administration.
  2. Requires two years of supervisory experience affording training in various facets of managing an outdoor recreational park or natural public area.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Requires elementary knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration, conservation, structural grounds maintenance, public relations and personnel administration.
  2. Requires ability to assign and supervise the work of assistants and staff members.
  3. Requires ability to apply appropriate levels of knowledge in problem solving situations encountered in the performance of duties and responsibilities.
  4. Requires ability to evaluate program effectiveness and to make recommendations on policies and procedures.
  5. Requires ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  6. Requires ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, artifacts, buildings and grounds.

Employment Conditions

  1. Requires possession of an appropriate valid driver's license.

  3. Ability to travel within and outside of the work location.
  4. Ability to work under adverse environmental conditions on a year-round basis.
