Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire a Site Superintendent 3 at Illinois Beach State Park.  This position will prepare, submit and monitor operating and capital improvement budgets as well as annual plans of work, monitor/implement site security/safety programs to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations, establish and maintain effective working relationships with the various concessions on site, media and interested groups and individuals, develop/implement public information materials and programs, review, analyze and incorporate proposals of natural and cultural resource specialists and others concerning short/long-range plans for site management, and appears at public hearings. The ideal candidate will utilize their supervisory skills, communication skills and love of the outdoors. Illinois Beach State Park - stretching 6.5 miles along the sandy shore of Lake Michigan in northern Illinois - offers a full range of recreation opportunities at one of the most unique and beautiful natural settings in America. Illinois Beach is the only remaining beach ridge shoreline left in the state, with dunes and swales, sprawling marshes, forests of oak and vast arrays of animal life and vegetation. We welcome all interested candidates to apply.

Essential Functions

  • Under direction, manages the operation of Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park; supervises a very large size subordinate staff engaged in site operations, maintenance, and interpretive activities, Serves as a full line supervisor.
  • Directs and participates in the preparation/maintenance of site operations and financial records/reports.
  • Oversees the site security and safety programs of the site.
  • Serves as site liaison with various individuals and groups.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements site activities and programs compatible with the natural and cultural resource base.
  • Assists site visitors and the general public with site information, policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  •  Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in park and recreation administration, or natural resource area administration, or in museum administration, history, American studies, or archeology.
  •  Requires four years of supervisory experience in managing an outdoor recreational park, or natural public area, or a cultural/historic site or museum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration including site interpretation, natural and/or cultural resource management, structural grounds maintenance, public relations, personnel administration, fiscal management, and outdoor recreation programs.
  • Two (2) years of experience assigning and supervising the work of assistants and staff members.
  • Two (2) years of experience applying appropriate levels of knowledge in problem solving situations encountered in the performance of duties and responsibilities.
  • Two (2) years of experience evaluating program effectiveness and making recommendations on policies and procedures.
  • Two (2) years of experience expressing ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
