Position Statement

Under direct supervision, performs semi-skilled and routine work associated with the operation and maintenance programs at Burning Star State Fish & Wildlife Area. Operates heavy equipment such as bulldozers, backhoes, road graders and farming machinery up to 11O hp.  Performs routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Operates pumps used for flooding of sub-impoundment areas. Utilizes various trucks to pick up litter and garbage throughout the site. Registers waterfowl hunters and monitors hunter check stations.  Conducts routine checks while cleaning. 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Operates heavy equipment such as bulldozers, backhoes, road graders and farming machinery up to 110 hp. to maintain site's wildlife farming programs, grading road, and ground clearing operations. Operates trucks and trailers with GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more with air break designation to haul grain and farm equipment.
  2. Performs routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment, changes oil, fluids, spark plugs and belts; washes vehicles; sharpens mower blades; performs semi-skilled maintenance of farm equipment; welds broken axles and fertilizer buggies.
  3. Operates pumps used for flooding of sub-impoundment areas; conducts routine maintenance for pump operation; constructs waterfowl blinds; corrects and monitors alignments to belt tensions in vehicles; repairs picnic tables; creates and repairs signs and markings on the trails accordingly.
  4. Utilizes various trucks to pick up litter and garbage throughout the site. Mows, plants trees, shrubs and grass, clears and trims brush and trees. Plows and shovels snow; patches roadways. Repairs docks, piers and ramps for visitors to be able to fish on the site property.
  5. Registers waterfowl hunters and monitors hunter check stations; directs visitor traffic; sells camping permits and collects fees; aids in the rescue of injured or stranded visitors; contacts proper authorities in emergencies or disturbances. Informs visitors of rules and regulations.
  6. Conducts routine checks while cleaning, dusts and cleans furniture. washes windows, sweeps and mops floors in restrooms, shower buildings, hunter check stations and other buildings located on the site property.
  7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires education and experience equivalent to completion of high school.
  2. Requires two (2) year's maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires working knowledge of equipment and tools used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment, farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  • Requires ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Requires ability to inform visitors of site facilities, programs, rules and regulations.
  • Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, artifacts, buildings and grounds. 
  • Prefers ability to complete First Aid/CPR training and maintain certification in such.

Physical Requirements

  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis.
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads which may exceed sixty (60) pounds.
  • Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

Employment Conditions

  • Requires possession of a Class A CDL with Air Brakes designation.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a pesticide applicator/operators license.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
