Position Overview: The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) is seeking to hire Nuclear Safety Health Physics Technician I. This position conducts the collection of environmental samples of various media in the environs of nuclear generating stations, licensed facilities and contaminated or potentially contaminated sites throughout the State. The position also conducts inspection and escort of certain types of radioactive materials and conducts radiological response operations. Essential Functions
- Conducts activities associated with the Agency’s Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program.
- Performs radiological surveys, compliance inspections, and escorts of shipments involved in the transport of radioactive materials.
- Participates in response actions for incidents or accidents involving the loss of control of radioactive materials in transit or at fixed facilities.
- Participates in activities necessary to ensure Registrant compliance with the Agency’s Water Treatment Residual regulations.
- Calibrates and operates the environmental dosimeter reader systems.
- Performs and/or schedules maintenance, repair, and calibration on sampling and surveying equipment.
- Performs duties of assigned team position as a member of the Radiological Task Force and remains available for callback during radiological and nuclear emergencies.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties described above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of a Bachelor Degree with major course work in physics, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and preferably including course work in nuclear sciences.
- Requires one (1) year of professional experience in the practice of health physics, radiochemistry, environmental safety, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers one (1) year of experience working with ionizing radiation, the physical and chemical properties of radioisotopes, and the biological and physical effects of radiation.
- Prefers one (1) year of experience working with applicable radiation protection standards, familiarity with radiation measuring equipment, radiochemistry, and environmental monitoring methods.
- Prefers one (1) year of experience understanding and applying rules, regulations, survey procedures, and sample collection procedures.
- Prefers one year of experience in environmental sampling, sample submittal, and laboratory processes.
- Prefers an OHSA Hazwoper certification at the technician level in both general site worker and emergency response.
- Prefers one (1) year experience working with Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.
- Prefers one (1) year of working knowledge and experience with global positioning systems and geographical information systems.
Conditions of Employment
- A criminal history check through the Illinois State Police.
- Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
- Ability to use state-supplied equipment such as cell phone, laptop, etc.
- Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, validdriver’s license.
- Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Ability to become Hazwoper certified at the technician level in both general site worker and emergency response.
- Ability to pass the Commercial Vehicles Safety Alliance (CVSA) Level VI Inspection certification course.
- This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
